REMAIN INDEPENDENT

Parkinson's is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system. Around 150,000 people in UK are affected. The most obvious sign of Parkinson's disease is tremor. Tremors are particularly common when the patient is at rest. For those affected, the visibility of the disease increases the level of suffering: slowed movements, muscle stiffness, postural instability and swallowing disorders can hardly be concealed from outsiders. Although everyday aids cannot influence the symptoms or the course of the disease, they do give Parkinson's sufferers back a certain quality of life and independence in their daily lives.

EAT TOGETHER

Shaky hands, limited mobility in the neck or the lack of a functional second hand rob people with disabilities of their independence when eating and drinking. Obvious aids can make those affected feel embarrassed or exposed when eating together, which can even lead to them refusing to eat. Colourful and functional tableware compensates for illness-related impairments and promotes independent eating and drinking - without stigmatising. The aids incorporated into the design are not recognisable at first glance and can be used intuitively. This significantly increases the acceptance of those affected and boosts their self-esteem so that they can take part in meals independently just like the old days.

MAINTAIN SKILLS

When the body no longer wants to obey due to the changes in the central nervous system, Parkinson's sufferers tend to adopt avoidance strategies and often choose isolation out of shame. Simple movements, such as holding a knife and fork, can no longer be managed alone. Helplessness overshadows enjoyment and pleasure. Relatives often try to take as much as possible off the patient's hands and support them with large and small tasks - starting with making sandwiches. However, activities of daily living such as personal hygiene and food preparation should be practised for as long as possible. Tableware with features hidden in the universal design promotes independence and enjoyment at the dining table. Together with the support of speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists, people with Parkinson's disease can retain some of their joy of life - despite limited coordination and fine motor skills.
